wait! come back! i wasn't ready!
(G): OMG! OMG! OMM-FG! I have never been in the water with anything that big before. They send up this spotter plane which buzzes up and down the reef looking for Big Things in the water. When they see one, they radio the boat and they position a short distance in front of the shark and push you into the water. A minute or so later, if you’re lucky, a huge, white-spotted whale shark emerges from the depths and serenely glides past you with barely a swish of its enormous tail. Then you kick your flippers like crazy to try and keep up with it for a minute or two before it effortlessly leaves you trailing in its wake.
I think we were incredibly fortunate. It’s the end of the season, they hadn’t seen a thing the day before, and we saw two sharks and swam twice with each one for a good 5-10 minutes. Topped the day off with three manta ray sightings – swooping through the water like giant aquatic bats.
And Lloydy didn’t even feel sick once!
(L): Difficult to know what to write really. Today was unquestionably one of the most sensational days of my entire life. I have been fascinated by sharks for as long as I can remember, and given lectures on them for more than 10 years now, but nothing could prepare me for the incredible awe that I felt being a few feet from the biggest fish in the oceans. They are so beautiful, and calm, and powerful; not scary, but big, my god they are big. And I saw a tiger shark; I never thought that that would be an addendum.
