It would be easy to get caught up in the boisterous bonhomie of backpacker life and, waving my hands in a youthful ‘right on’ kind of a way, extol to you the virtues of throwing yourself out of a plane at 14,000ft. Unfortunately, I cannot. I’ll admit that the adrenaline hit when you’re on the edge of the plane is something else, but to be perfectly frank I found the whole parachute jump experience somewhat disagreeable. When you’re hurtling toward the earth at terminal velocity, breathing is a bit of a challenge. You also feel like everything is being pulled off your face; goggles, hat, nose, cheeks… And your ears build up pressure so quick, it’s impossible to equalise. This was only a minor concern, however, because just when I had focused on the horizon, Charlie, my tandem dive master insisted on doing loop-the-loops and spins and dives, risking a thorough coating in vomit. When the parachute opened at a meagre 4,000ft (some 60 seconds after leaving the aircraft), and I finally took a breath, I did at last get to enjoy the view. At least until Charlie gave me the parachute controls :O
